THE FABLES OF LEONARDO - FAVOLE DI LEONARDO
Experiments, fragments and visions of the great creative genius - Sperimentazioni, frammenti e visioni del grande genio creativo!

Company Aiello presents a bilingual theatrical performance in Italian and English called "Fables of Leonardo - Favole di Leonardo".
Fairy tales, puppetry, and music combine to create a dynamic theatrical experience inspired by the writings and observations of the great Leonardo da Vinci. Using the anecdotes and aphorisms that Leonardo used to cheer the guests at the court of Duke Ludovico il Moro of Milan as a jumping-off point, Company Aiello has created a show that combines the company’s specialities with the time of Leonardo and the wonderful world of this witty, versatile, and tireless prankster.
“As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well spent brings happy death!”
This quote of Leonardo’s makes it easy to imagine a man always ready to jump into the limelight to share his ideas: his subtle observation of natural phenomena, his artistic experiences and how he linked them to the
physical universe. An innovator with insatiable curiosity who also takes relaxing seriously, showing a blend of humor and balance which brings us to our first fable, evoking the past tense: "The City of Leggerezza"
The second part, or present tense, is "The Ramification of Plants/Tree and Muscles”. The use of recycled objects and contemporary/free sounds, inspired by Leonardo’s process of investigation and developing hypotheses, will explore the Anthropocene natural world we are creating.
Finally in the third fable - looking to the future, as in a prophetic revelation, the Company will devise instruments and experiences from the past toward a vision of generations yet to arrive: "Of the Nature Now Cooked".
This show was conceived to remember Leonardo da Vinci on the 500th anniversary of his death (1519).

You can explore maker spaces. fort building, STEAM activities, crafts, music and more.  Hope to see you there!

Next week the Company is going on tour! Our first show is at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative on October 17. We will be performing two pieces that together are 60 minutes long:

Spazzolino: Cameriere e Cavaliere: Out of Italian theatrical tradition, puppeteer Angelo Aiello has created an original character named Spazzolino. He’s a rascal and prankster who can’t help but save the day, a wooden-headed hero to the people who embodies a mischievous joie di vivre. He wants only two things: a mountain of beans to eat and justice for everyone. With a good heart and a good fork, he can get himself out of (almost) any situation.

King Pepper: Based on a fairy tale by Italo Calvino. Princess Reginella is unimpressed with all of her potential suitors, so she decides to create her husband herself. She builds her king out of flour and sugar, with a red chili pepper for a mouth. But when an evil queen kidnaps King Pepper, Reginella needs to enact a daring rescue.

Both are written and performed by Angelo Aiello with live musical accompaniment by Rachel Icenogle

On October 18, we will be returning to the Black Cherry Puppet Theater, presenting the ribald Spazzolino and the Fallo Fail: based on a commedia dell'arte sketch, this is the story of Spazzolino, an errant servant who is sent to obtain a potion for help resolving his master Magnifico's performance issues.  But Spazzolino can't resist drinking it himself!

Featuring puppets made by Zanubrio Marionettes and music written by Rachel Icenogle, Lis Dembling, and Mark Watter.

July 15, 22, 29 August 5, 12, 19 2018 10:00 am - 2:00pm - Liberty Lands Park, 913 N. 3rd St. Philadelphia.
Company Aiello is hosting a workshop in puppet construction. Built from recycled materials, things we would otherwise throw away are given new life as whimsical characters. By working with what is typically seen as trash, we can learn to build a world that is a little more sustainable, and to think more about what we toss out.
